Journey Chiropractic Patient Information: Chiropractic Care & Spinal Manipulation

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession focused on diagnosing, treating, and helping prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. Your chiropractor is registered with the General Chiropractic Council and uses manual techniques to restore movement, reduce pain, and support your body’s natural function.

What is Spinal Manipulation & Mobilisation?

– Manipulation involves a skilled, high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust applied to spinal joints (or other joints) to improve mobility.
– Mobilisation uses gentler, slower movement of joints to increase motion.
– Also included in your care plan may be soft tissue work (e.g. muscle release, stretching), advice, exercises and posture correction.

Why Do It? (Potential Benefits)

You may experience:
– Pain reduction (back, neck, joints)
– Increased range of movement
– Reduced stiffness and improved flexibility
– Improved posture, function, ability to do daily activities
– Potential for reduced reliance on pain medications (in some cases)

What are the Risks & Side Effects?

While most people tolerate chiropractic treatment well, it is important to be aware of possible risks:

Common / Mild Side Effects:
– Temporary soreness, stiffness
– Mild bruising
– Fatigue, headache after treatment

Rare / More Serious Possibilities*:
– Very rare: increased pain; nerve irritation; fractures in predisposed patients
– Discomfort in existing conditions (e.g. osteoporosis)
– Complications are extremely rare if thorough history & appropriate care is taken

*Before treatment, your chiropractor will take a full history to assess if there are any risk factors (eg, osteoporosis, medication, previous surgeries) which may affect suitability.

Is It Safe?

Yes, spinal manipulation is considered safe when done by fully registered and qualified chiropractors.
Safety increases with thorough assessment, clear communication of your health history, gradual treatment plan, monitoring of your response.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable, or experience symptoms you think unusual, tell your practitioner immediately.

Important Notes

Results vary person to person. Some improvement may take a few sessions; sometimes symptoms resolve more quickly.
Please tell your chiropractor if you have any underlying health conditions (e.g. cancer, neurological problems, severe osteoporosis, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, recent surgery) or if you are on medications that may affect your treatment.
